Where to get the best vegan breakfast in Edinburgh in Veganuary

So you’re trying Veganuary and already you’re missing those big fry ups/Sunday brunch pancake stack/ simple fruit and yogurt! Switching to a vegan diet can be tough … think of it the same way as being on a weight loss diet, you are trying to change habits of a lifetime. Breakfast out used to be a pretty boring affair for vegans; beans on toast (no margarine of course) was a tiresome staple. However, times are a changing. Here’s my list of where to get the best vegan breakfast in Edinburgh to help you through Veganuary …

Loudons vegan pancakes and vegan eggs Benedict

By far one of my favourite places to eat vegan in Edinburgh! Loudons is by no means a vegan restaurant, however, they do a wonderful job of catering for us. Their giant pancake stack and eggs Benedict (Bennys) menus both come with a vegan friendly alternative. I was so excited on my first visit that I ordered two plates to myself: the spiced sultana pancakes with mango and peach compote AND the vegan English muffins. Check out their full menu here.

Thrive vegan and vegetarian cafe bar

thrive vegan breakfast

One of the newest places for vegan or vegetarian food in Edinburgh, located in the charming area of Bruntsfield. Thrive’s brunch menu does contain egg offerings, but their main menu is 100% vegan. This trendy vegan cafe/bar has a comfortable dining area at the front and relaxed bar vibe at the back. Friendly staff surrounded by pretty plants and exposed brickwork. Can I go as far as to say, most Instagrammable full Scottish breakfast in Edinburgh?

Bross Bagels vegan bagels

Not great if you’re looking for a big vegan breakfast/brunch, but ideal for a filling start to the day when you’re on the go. The Edinburgh Leith menu is a veggie’s breakfast dream. Grilled jack-fruit, melted ‘cheese’, smashed avocado, vegan ‘bacon’ and hot kimchi sauce are on the toppings list, so you can forget about being short for choice. A lot of the city centre morning sandwich and coffee shops are pretty limited when it comes to a meat and dairy-free diet, so Bross Bagels place is a refreshing change.

Piece Box vegan breakfast

Presentation might not be as pretty as some of the other vegan food in Edinburgh, but the flavours and variety in Piece Box’s vegan breakfast more than make up for it. Probably of one the largest plates on the list, not only does it come with all the usual traditional breakfast offerings, but it also includes Spanish potatoes, toasted almond & potato rostis AND vegan mayonnaise!

Herbivore Kitchen vegan bacon pancakes

It would be rude to do a vegan breakfast post without including what is undoubtedly one of the best vegan cafes in Edinburgh. I like this place so much that I included it in a previous post: Vegan in Edinburgh – Part 2. Currently only open at weekend, the kitchen is known around the city for its inventive menus. Although they also serve cakes, wraps and bowls, no visit would be complete without sampling their deliciously tempting pancakes. Salted Caramel Sauce, Sticky Toffee Cake, Brulee Banana, Chocolate Ganache and Toffee Popcorn on Gingerbread Pancakes … how could I say no? For their other pancake flavours, check out the menu.
