    Backpack relationships

    25/06/2017

Holiday relationships. So many of us have had them, right? But does the significance of them change when the holiday isn’t a holiday, but a backpack trip? I wrote this post a day before learning that a man with whom I’d had a very short backpack ‘fling’ had died, only a few days before. After returning from the trip on which I met him, we kept in touch for over a year. This June he was supposed to visit me as an add on to a family trip. A month before, he cancelled. Turns out, he knew about his illness but was too stubborn to tell anyone. I dedicate this…

    24 hours in Puebla, Mexico

    05/03/2017

Puebla is one of Mexico’s biggest cities, located just a couple of hours South East of Mexico City (check out my Mexico City 3-day guide). Usually missed out in favour of some of the better known tourist locations, Puebla is only a 3 hour bus journey from the capital. I was fortunate enough to be taken on an overnight trip to find out what was so special about this Spanish colonial city. Here’s why you should too… Mexican Street of Colour Situated near the zocalo (centre), this little street was lined with cafes, antique stores and pretty painted houses. Locals stand in the doorways to their shops, and will happily chat…

Things to know before you visit Havana, Cuba

    28/02/2017

Taking a trip to Cuba before it gets completely devoured by tourism? After a little stint in bustling Havana, this is what I found out… You won’t get the Cuban exchange rate the web tells you The Cuban currency is a closed one, meaning you can’t buy it outside of Cuba, and you need to get rid f it before you leave. This gives the Cubans a lot more power over what rate you get. The web told me I’d get 1.24 CUC to the pound. The airport gave me 1.19. There was nothing I could do but accept it to get my transport into the city. I was also told…

Ghost trend at Niddry Castle, just outside of Edinburgh.
We wanted to bring Scottish feels to our ghost photoshoot, so we headed to this 16th Century tower house in West Lothian.
The tower was built around 1500, and rumour has it that Mary, Queen of Scots stayed here in 1568, after her escape from captivity in Lochleven Castle.
Spot the nod to Scotland's unofficial soft drink too!

The Witches Rock in Fife sits alongside the shorel
The Witches Rock in Fife sits alongside the shoreline of Torryburn. Accused of witchcraft, people were tied out here to be judged & sentenced by the waters. There was no escape, a sentence was inevitable - you drown, you are found innocent, you survive, you are a witch and sentenced to punishment.

The team at @heyplantbae on Edinburgh's Easter Road have extended their cafe offering with a huge range of colourful (and enormous) pastries - perfect for weekend breakfast and/or brunch!
Their pastries are plant based and vegan friendly, but you'd never tell the difference between them and their dairy-filled alternatives.

Finally made it down to Edinburgh Street Food at the Omni Centre to try out their vegan options.
The two key vegan offerings are Antojitos (all vegan) and Homies pizza (3 vegan pizza choices).
It's been noted by many others before me that prices at ESF are astronomical - I agree - and while I appreciate it's a central location with high running costs, the prices (from what we saw) are not reflective of portion sizes.

In the 1590s, King James VI Scotland's fear of witchcraft began stirring up national panics. From the late 16th to the early 18th century, accusations of witchcraft spread like wildfire throughout Scotland.

The only named witch's grave in Scotland – Lillias
The only named witch's grave in Scotland - Lillias Aidie's story deserves more recognition than it receives.
Scotland's persecution of 'witches' hit its peaks between the late 16th to the early 18th century. It is estimated that between 3 and 4 thousand people were tortured and executed as 'witches'.
At the age of 64, Lillias Aidie was added to the list of suspects after a woman felt delirious after an evening of drinking one night in 1704 — and so she concluded that her neighbor, Lilias, must have summoned Satan to cast a spell on her.
