    Weekend backpacker in Copenhagen

    23/07/2016

Flights to Copenhagen can get freakishly low when flying in from elsewhere in Europe, making it a desirable backpacker destination. However, it’s worth noting that, despite cheap flights, the city itself is really quite expensive. Here’s my tips for taking budget a trip as a weekend backpacker in Copenhagen. Hostel in Copenhagen Flights to the city may be cheap, but accommodation in Copenhagen is not. Despite everyone recommending Airbnb for our weekend stay, we opted for hostel living (I wanted to see how this would work if I were travelling solo, and we like the fun and the prospect of meeting new people). We booked into the Copenhagen Downtown Hostel.…

Another fire on Arthur's Seat! 😣

Just days after a devastating fire began tearing through the Cairngorms, a fire has broken out below Salisbury Crags - reported at 18:40 on Sunday 19th July.

Police Scotland close Queens Drive to all vehicles as firefighters battle the flames.

📍 Friday 28 August (21:30 performance)

The RAF Red Arrows have already been confirmed for the opening Saturday performance, with the remaining aircraft due to be announced.

If previous years are anything to go by, you could see anything from RAF Typhoons to Apache helicopters.

Even if you don't have Tattoo tickets, a lot of locals head to Calton Hill, the top of Leith Walk, or the Royal Mile to catch the planes swoop overhead.

[PR Invite] with @sundayriley . It's very rare that a brand encourages us to bring our friends along to their event, so this week's Sunday Riley brand Immersion evening was really special.🍸 (and, of course, cruelty-free 🐇)

(Scroll to steal my 25% off code - Valid until next Weds, 22nd July at SPACE NK St. James or online)

We all got ready for a girls night and arrived at 6pm to hear from Sunday Riley herself, before hitting the interactive stations with cocktails to customise a skincare routine.

A big thank you to the Sunday Riley team for such a wholesome girls night with lots of take-home gifts.

One of the most whimsical experiences in the centre of Paris. @cafepli is built around a simple but memorable idea: instead of just having coffee and cake, you write a handwritten letter that will be mailed in the future.

On arrival you order a "letter package," which includes stationery, an envelope, stickers, the length of time you want to wait until postage, wax seals and a drink.

You write a letter to your future self or to someone else and then the café stores your letter and posts it on the date you selected. They also offer international delivery!

I recommend making a reservation, as slots can book up fast. Ideal for both rainy days or taking a break from the heatwave in Paris.

A cool whisky tasting experience in Edinburgh for
A cool whisky tasting experience in Edinburgh for history lovers, or people who simply want a lesser-known spot.

@thelostclose is one of Edinburgh's newest historic discoveries, despite being one of its oldest spaces.

Today, you can take a 90-minute underground whisky tasting, where you will try 4 drams of Scottish whisky and learn about the different regions.

The close was rediscovered in 2019 during renovation work beneath Parliament Square (the close had been hidden from the city for almost 200 years.) Before that, it formed part of Edinburgh's medieval street network, one of the narrow alleyways, or "closes", that connected the Royal Mile to the streets below.

Its original name has been lost to time. Historians know a close once existed here, but can't say for certain whether it was Steil's Close, Royal Bank Close, Hangman's Close, or another passage entirely. That's how it came to be known simply as The Lost Close.

The Barbie exhibition at the @kelvingroveartgaller
The Barbie exhibition at the @kelvingroveartgalleryandmuseum started on the 13th June and runs until the 18th October.

It's the first time a major show dedicated to the doll has been staged in Scotland, and in it you'll see hundreds of dolls, alongside vintage Dream houses, vehicles, and accessories.

The exhibition highlights how Barbie and her friends have evolved to reflect society, featuring over 35 skin tones and celebrated models like the first amputee Barbie and the first with vitiligo (to make just a couple)

Tickets for a standard adult price: £16.00 peak hours, £14.00 for off-peak hours.

I used to love the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for all of its bizarre shows and wild, unexpected venues (who remembers the wee man who drove folk around the Meadows in a tuk-tuk with a cup of tea?)

And while the really unhinged stuff doesn't pop up the way it used to 5/10 years ago, I still bury my head in the programme every year to try and find something that feels unique.

Here are a few in looking at getting tickets for in the Edinburgh Fringe 2026 this year.

A wee disclaimer: I have absolutely no idea how these shows will turn out, but they caught my eye with their concept while I was on my search. If anyone has any off-the-wall suggestions, don't gatekeep, drop them in the comments.

📍 Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye – You know I love
📍 Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye - You know I love an old castle story, so it was wonderful to talk to the team at the castle for this one.

The Fairy Flag of Dunvegan is one of the most famous clan heirlooms in Scotland, and its origins remain the subject of both legend and historical debate. Which story do you believe?

According to MacLeod tradition, the flag was left behind by fairies. Over time, the flag became associated with protective powers and was said to be capable of helping the clan in times of great need.

But there are other theories about how it arrived on Skye.

One story links the flag to Harald Hardrada, the 11th-century Norse king who served with the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine Empire before his death at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

According to this story, a treasured banner eventually passed through the rulers of the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Man - where it was given to Leod (son of King Olaf the Black), who Clan MacLeod takes its name from.

The flag has attracted academic interest. In the early 1930s, it was examined by A. J. B. Wace of London's Victoria and Albert Museum at the invitation of Sir Reginald MacLeod.

Wace concluded that the fabric was silk originating from either Syria or the island of Rhodes, both places associated with Harald Hardrada's travels during his time with the Varangians, and dated it to at least the 11th century - going against the original, earlier date.

It's only 10 nights until the summer solstice in Scotland, and this evening the sunset in Portree, Skye, was at 10:19 PM.

Given the high northerly latitude, you'll experience very long summer days (nearly 18 hours of daylight) with twilight lasting well past 11:30 PM.

Location Carnasserie Castle, under 2miles north of
Location Carnasserie Castle, under 2miles north of Kilmartin on the A816 in Argyll and Bute, Western Scotland. It takes around 3.5 hours from Edinburgh and 2.5 from Glasgow.

Just this month I met an 80-yr-old man named David. David was completely reliant on his mobility walker to get around after he'd had an episode where the connection between his brain and balance permanently failed.

Despite this, David was on his 3rd vacation of 2026, and told me that admitting defeat and putting a halt to the things you enjoy the most will eventually be the end of you.

And while you've sometimes just got to listen to your body's physical limitations, I'm definitely going to try and be more like David when it comes to mental motivation.

These clips were taken before my second surgery (and physio - which ultimately made things a lot worse), but gives an idea of what this castle trip might look like on crutches.

Built in the 1560s by John Carswell, the first Protestant Bishop of the Isles, Carnasserie Castle was once one of the most impressive residences in Argyll. It was heavily damaged in 1685 during Argyll's Rebellion and has remained a ruin ever since.

Have you ever seen the Walking Dead? Walking through this site makes you feel like you're in that other world! Built in 1944 as an RAF operations command centre, the underground 'city' was later heavily expanded into an enormous 3-storey nuclear bunker.

After a devastating fire in the late 1990s that burned for days, major restoration began in 2011, headed by an incredible team of volunteers and site owners. This huge undertaking has transformed the abandoned Cold War site into a museum and educational center.

(Not an ad, I just really wanted a teddy bear coffee!)

This weekend I went up to grab myself an iced coffee with its own little bear. These are normally topped with cream and can also be served with their matcha.

A huge shout out to lovely Reshma and Kelvin, who couldn't have been more accommodating with their menu for plant-based foodies, and we're just so friendly.

First time at @prestonfieldhouseedinburgh (and so) first time trying their vegan afternoon tea.

It was so refreshing to learn that, not only do they do a plant-based option, but the full menu sits on the website as a continual offering, rather than a barreled together afterthought.

Menu below. My only (very very small) critique is that they could provide a vegan clotted cream for scones - I appreciate it's a tough gig, but some of the competitors do provide it, and it would have pushed me into a hard 5/5 rating. Overall, brilliant menu with lots of creative bites.

What a whisky launch celebration looks like in Edinburgh. This week, I got to try the newest addition to the @mactallawhisky family: Mac-Talla Single Malt Whisky Cognac release, created to mark Fèis Ìle 2026.

Its official release is next week, with only 1200 bottles worldwide (and 360 in Scotland.)

This is a lighter, fruitier-style whisky, focusing on stone fruits like apricots and peaches, with a delicate, earthy peat, and florals.

Not quite an 'entry level' whisky, though it's dangerously easy to drink at 52.4%

A big thank you as well to @lepetitraisin_winebar who rustled up the most colourful vegan charcuterie board - new Thistle Street food location unlocked.
